All state cannabis programs are inconsistent with federal drug law.
Rather than obtaining federal authorization under 21 U.S.C. § 822(d), all states, including Iowa, authorize criminal organizations to run these programs.
The day before the hearing on our bill (Senate File 69) to correct this error, the Des Moines Register sensationalized the promotion of cannabis as a lifestyle choice and abuse of THC limit waivers.
The Register is somehow blind to the fact the entire program is illegal!
How many license applications have you seen where it asks if you’re willing to violate federal drug law and you have to answer “yes” to get the license?
Think about the message this sends to underprivileged youth in highly populated urban areas!
Senator Zaun will try to run SF 69 again in 2024, but the department does not need to wait for the legislature.
Why are we letting this evil continue to expand in our state?
Iowa could set the standard on how to do this right.
We are missing the greatest opportunity of a lifetime!
